Hartford Youth Scholars

Official Homepage Direct Message

The mission of Hartford Youth Scholars (HYS) is to create lifetime opportunities for underserved Hartford children through education. Our primary objective is to place Scholars who complete our program at four-year colleges prepared to be successful in the postsecondary environment. We envision these Hartford Scholars attaining postsecondary degrees and then returning to work and live in Hartford, thereby inspiring and helping to cultivate similar achievements in younger Hartford students.

HYS helps highly motivated Hartford students gain access to and graduate from best fit secondary schools and colleges. The organization provides Scholars and their families with academic, tutoring and mentoring support for 10 years, beginning the summer before students enter 7th grade and continuing through college graduation.

HYS’ current programming includes The Steppingstone Academy Hartford and our Support Services program. Hartford students’ participation in these two programs provides them with support beginning the summer after they finish 6th grade and continuing through their graduation from college.

Services Provided

Beyond what students receive in the Hartford Youth Scholars classroom we also realize the importance of educating the whole child. Experiences are invaluable; we provide opportunities for our Scholars to travel to new places, experience new activities and try new things. One recent example was a group of 5 Scholars who traveled to Washington DC to visit Howard University and participate in the Million Man March. We also provide annual excursions to the Hartford Stage, as well as numerous social engagements, including the 2015 black tie gala at the Wadsworth Athenaeum for the Amistad Center for Art and Culture and Hartford's 40 Under Forty event.

Student Qualifications

Only Hartford students (must also be Hartford residents) are eligible; we recruit 25-35 rising seventh and eighth grade students each year. There is no GPA requirement, but our academic programming is rigorous and attendance/commitment is required.
